I have been shedding lots of hair for the past 3 years. My hair is noticeably thinner. My hair loss is diffuse. Sometimes I can loose as much as 400+ hairs a day. My bio hair looks terrible...it is frizzy unmanageable and looks greasy just a few hours right after I have washed it. Sometimes my scalp is extremely sore...does the soreness mean I will be loosing more hair in that particular area? Or...does it mean that hair is growing in that area? Also can I get cortisone injections on my scalp? Thank you.

Hello
For diffuse hair loss alopecia and telogen effluvium should be ruled out. Regarding the investigations which can be done to confirm the cause of hair loss some of the important ones to be done are:
1) Iron studies and thyroid function tests
2) Testosterone and dihydrotestosterone levels
3) Trichoscopy (in this hair and scalp structures may be visualized at many-fold magnification)
4) Scalp biopsy.
I suggest you to consult a trichologist and get these investigations done.
Do not get the steroid injections without medical supervision as cause needs to be identified first. Moreover steroid injections have side effects like indentations in the scalp which can be unsightly.
It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is ba
