Heritage GERD

My father died at the age of 52 years old of "stomach" GERD? cancer. My elder brother died at the age of 52 years old of stomach GERD? cancer. Currently i am 45 years old having some heartburn symptoms. My doctor says if some over the counter medicine don`t improve my symptoms I may need to be cautious and this may lead to a more serious condition as my family past medical history. Should I become concerned if I still experience throat irritation and some cough but no stomach pain at all due to stomach acids?

With your family history and the fact that you are having symptoms you should get an endoscope which will show how you are doing. GERD is not cancer but untreated it can lead to Barrett's esophagus which can then lead to esophageal cancer. The endoscope is the best way to check as symptoms alone can't tell you anything definitive.
