pregnant and worried

I recently found out I am pregnant and tomorrow a nurse will be calling me to set my first appointment and in the mean time I have been looking up random information. My husband has two sisters and a brother. The males are very smart and the two girls have learning disabilities. I'm just a bit worried that my child could have learning disabilities. Is this something I should be concerned about?

Hello First of all congratulations! There is no reason to worry about it now as there is no way to know whether your child will have a learning disability or not. Learning Disabilities are determined by many factors and while genes do play a certain role in the likelihood of developing this condition there are many other influences. Having said that i think it will be a good idea to monitor your child’s development especially with respect to early speech emergence and fine motor skills and provide professional support if any of these skills are delayed. Consult with speech-language pathologist and/ or occupational therapist if needed. Once your child starts school have ongoing communication with his/ her teacher and if there are any concerns get a psycho-educational assessment for your child. Early intervention usually gives very good results. But for now just relax and enjoy the experience! All the best
