& year old with Learning Delays and bathrrom issues

I have a 7 year old with learning delays and bathroom issues. We call them pooping problems. He has been on miralax sine he was 18 months and no doctors seem to listen to me that they is something else going on. I was just looking for any ideas on what the problems good be. We goes in his pants everyday some times it just oozes out. It is almost like he does not care. There are times when he does not even know that he was went. Please any ideas would be great. Thank you

Hello Mombe The term for your son's condition is encopresis. It is unpleasant for parents but not uncommon. Children can develop encopresis for both medical and behavioral reasons (such as withholding out of fear of discomfort). Over time the bowel can lose sensitivity to the sensation of having to go and can become distended if not evacuated as needed. Your son may not be aware of having leakage though it is of concern that he does not seem to be bothered. I would ask for a referral to a pediatric gastroenterologist for an evaluation. If you find that there is nothing medically wrong a psychologist with expertise in managing encopresis can help your son regain healthy behaviors around elimination. Best wishes
