Extremely high BP

My 52-yr-old daughter is experiencing exceedingly high BP numbers: 220/189 recently - in her doctor's office. She is quick to point out that her numbers always soar on her visits. At home her recent number was 189/113 after having had her personal meter calibrated and having been put on bed rest for several days. Her doctor insists her food regimen is the cause and has cut out everything but chicken fish fresh veggies (not canned) and salad. She occasionally sneaks in a small portion of steak. She had been walking daily but may have given it up in favor of her new job at a pet shelter where she stays active cleaning cages stocking supplies breaking in feral cats and interacting with people looking for pets. She tells me the animals do as much for her peace of mind as she does for them! What is the doctor overlooking in focusing only on her diet? (She won't confide in me what meds she's taking other than for HBP - no names.)

Lets assume that the "white coat" effect increases the blood pressure from 189/113 to 220/189 and that the 189/113 best represents the average blood pressure. 189/113 is still way too high to leave untreated. Food can have impact on bp (i.e. salt increases bp) but in normal cases you will not get reduction in bp from 189/113 to acceptable values by simply adjusting your diet.
