Well to answer your question it all depends on the size of the stones that your husband has been having and whether or not they can will and do pass on their own. In the over 30 plus years and 40 plus stones that I personally have had in that time frame I have had to have surgery on two occasions to remove the stones. Once 30 plus years ago and the second time just this past May of 2014. The rest of the stones that I have had passed on their own. Your husband's physical makeup may have somehing to do with the reason he has to have surgery to remove his stones too. Yes it certainly isn't pleasant to have the procedure your husband has to have to remove all his stones but the alternative is a lot more unpleasant than those surgeries as your hubby well knows. It may be that this will be the way he has to go to have his stones removed the rest of his life for whatever reason but he must have them removed and appaently his Urologist is taking care of that for him which is the good/great thing here.
