I read you to say the patient is in crisis not caregiver of observer (you?). It is understandable that the patient would be in a crisis emotional state. The doctor (oncologist) should be able to prescribe some medication that will help reduce anxiety and depression - or make a referral to another specialist. Most communities have crisis centers for health issues check with yoiur local hospital. Some may be free of charge others are likely covered by Medicare/Medicaid and private health insurance
