Hi there and thanks so much for posting this question!
As a former basketball player I am very familiar with this incident. The human rib cage also known as the thoracic cage is a bony and cartilaginous structure which surrounds the thoracic cavity and supports the pectoral girdle forming a core portion of the human skeleton.
In addition the rib cage has a cardinal importance in breathing so that is why an impact in that area can be extremely uncomfortable and sometimes with breathing problems.
Intercostal muscles are several groups of muscles that run between the ribs and help form and move the chest wall. The intercostal muscles are mainly involved in the mechanical aspect of breathing. These muscles help expand and shrink the size of the chest cavity when you breathe.
You can try the side stretchand lean to that side. At the point of maximum tension try to breath and inhale as much oxygen as possible to the oxygen travel to the damged area.
My recommendation is to monitor any pain after 48 hours and if the pain persists go to a local doctor and check if your rib cage and intercostal muscles are ok.
Hope this helps!
