I began an oral contraceptive in 2009 and have taken it near perfectly since. Due to severe mood swings and painful extensive periods I have switched brands three times. I am currently taking GeneressFe the chewable minty pill. I love it simply because of those qualities! I was 15 when I first started taking the pill and my weight fluctuated anywhere between 135 and 145. I ate a lot of fast food stayed busy but never exercised and I believe my height was 5"2 ish. Now I am 19 I think one or two inches taller and over the years have become significantly more diet conscious. I eat substantially healthier exercise on a little bit more regular basis but I now weigh 17 5 pounds! My doctor tested me for any issues with my thyroid which all came back normal. We concluded it is most likely the pill and that I will just have to work harder. But 50 pounds in four years and making only positive changes throughout that time? Is that common? Thanks!

Hi! If you were my patient I would have to say that unfortunately yes it is quite common for women to gain significant amounts of weight at around that age range. It could be related to the pill or it might have happened even without it. Exercise and diet will be crucial to maintain or lose some weight. You could discontinue the pill and see if you feel less hungry and are eating less. If you don't notice a difference you could re-start or use a different birth control method such as a paraguard IUD which is non-hormonal. Work on the weight now because it only gets harder as you age! Good luck!
