Hello- I have a question regarding an antibiotic I was prescribed when I was 6 weeks pregnant. I had a severe UTI and went to the ER and was given Bactrim. I'm worried about the adverse affects because after reading several articles online they had all mentioned the drugs risks. I know that the neural tube is supposed to close during the first 4-5 weeks and I'm worried since Bactrim blocks the absorption of folic acid that the antibiotic may have interfered with the baby's development. I'm so nervous. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

Hi! If you were my patient i would advise you that you probably don't need to worry. If you were taking your prenatal vitamins you probably had more than enough folic acid for the baby. I would suggest doing an ultrasound as early as your doctor feels that you can--that will show the spine and abdominal wall and should put your mind at ease. Good luck!
